What this does not change

Nothing on this site is recommended because it pays. Where a page’s subject is a physical thing you might buy, or where it explains something that needs a particular tool, we may link to that category of product — and where neither is true, we do not invent a reason to. On this site that means two things. When a page cites an ancient text — the Iliad, the Prose Edda, the Epic of Gilgamesh — it may link a search for translations of that text, shown beside the sentence that cites it. When a page about a figure discusses a statue of that figure, it may link a search for statues of them; that is never done for traditions that are living religious practice. A handful of pages go further and name a specific translation and say why that one; those are the only edition recommendations on the site.

No publisher has paid for a mention, seen a page before it was published, or had any say in which translation is described as the standard one. Where a page recommends an edition, the reason given is the reason — the gaps in the tablets are marked, the recension is named, the translator kept the strangeness — and it would be the same recommendation with no commission attached.

Where we link, we link to a search for the edition rather than to one specific listing. That is partly honesty, since a particular printing has not been inspected here, and partly practical: translations are reissued constantly, and a fixed listing goes out of stock or quietly turns into a different book, while a search for the translator and the title stays right.

How to spot the links

Affiliate links open in a new tab and are marked as sponsored in the page’s HTML. Wherever a group of them appears, a short disclosure line appears with it, so you never have to come to this page to find out.

Other ways this site is funded

This site also carries display advertising and sells a printable companion, and takes direct support from readers. All of that is set out on the about and support pages, and none of it buys a say in the writing either.
